The different types of free zones in Colombia are a fundamental tool for the different types of companies that exist in Colombia in terms of employment generation, foreign investment and economic growth of the country. Types of Companies that can operate in a Free Trade Zone
Also known as qualified users, the different types of companies that exist in Colombia that can be installed inside a free trade zone, according to the regulations, must comply with certain provisions, according to the type of free trade zone in which they will be installed (multi-company, single-company or transitory). These users are further divided into: service users (they provide services to third parties), goods users (companies that import material, transform, produce and sell) and commercial users (which can only store and sell goods).
The Law 1004 of 2005provides the following for the users of the different types of free zones:
Article 3°. Users of the Free Trade Zone are the Operating Users, Industrial Users of Goods, Industrial Users of Services and Commercial Users.
The user operator is the legal entity authorized to manage, administer, supervise, promote and develop one or more Free Trade Zones, as well as to qualify its users.
The Industrial User of Goods is the legal entity installed exclusively in one or more Free Trade Zones, authorized to produce, transform or assemble goods by processing raw materials or semi-finished products.
The Industrial Service User is the legal person authorized to develop, exclusively, in one or several Free Trade Zones, among others, the following activities:
- Logistics, transportation, handling, distribution, packing, repacking, packaging, labeling or classification;
- Telecommunications, information technology systems for data capture, processing, storage and transmission, and organization, management or operation of databases;
- Scientific and technological research;
- Medical, dental and general health care;
- Tourism;
- Repair, cleaning or quality testing of goods;
- Technical support, maintenance and repair of equipment, ships, aircraft or machinery;
- Audit, management, brokerage, consulting or similar.
The commercial user is the legal person authorized to develop marketing, commercialization, storage or conservation activities of goods in one or several Free Trade Zones.
Companies in ZFO
At Zona Franca De Occidente we are committed to the economic growth of the country, as well as to the generation of employment for thousands of people in the different types of companies that exist in Colombia. Technology
For the technology sector, we have 8% of companies in our free trade zone that are dedicated to the assembly of computer equipment and data centers.
As for computer assembly, the tasks performed there include: assembly of the central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), motherboard, memory (RAM), storage, power supply, CPU cooling, boards, and other parts necessary for the assembly of a computer.
On the other hand, the data centers that operate in the Zona Franca de Occidente fulfill a vital mission, as they are in charge of storing and processing confidential data of millions of users.
Plastics
Within ZFO there are 6% of plastic companies operating in the production and marketing of flexible films and thermoformed packaging for this industry. Equipment for injection, vaccination and animal care are also produced.
Pharmaceutical
This is one of the strongest sectors of our free zone. We have the company of different types of companies that exist in Colombia that are dedicated to various tasks corresponding to the health and pharmacy sector, within which we can name the following:
- Marketing and distribution of products for research purposes.
- Quality control analysis.
- Storage, distribution and inventory control of products endorsed by INVIMA, which belong to the beauty, hygiene, human and animal health sectors.

- Logistics and assembly services.
